Best of the OHL- A Scout’s Perspective

Who’s the most overrated draft eligible from the OHL? Who’s the most likely to captain an NHL team one day?

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing a professional scout (who wished to remain anonymous) specializing in the OHL, and he was kind enough to answer a litany of questions for me regarding the draft eligibles under his watch. Some of his answers are obvious, like Nail Yakupov being the best winger in the draft, but many of his choices will catch you by surprise. Enjoy!

Best center – Alex Galchenyuk – Sarnia
Best winger – Nail Yakupov – Sarnia
Best defenseman  - Cody Ceci – Ottawa
Best goalie – Malcolm Subban – Belleville

Most mobile defenseman – Nick Ebert – Windsor
Best hitting defenseman – Adam Pelech – Erie
Best puckmover – Matt Finn – Guelph
Best defensive defenseman – Adam Pelech – Erie
Best all around defenseman – Toss up between Finn and Ceci … Will be real close, but nod to Ceci

Fastest forward – Matia Marcantuoni – Kitchener
Best hitting forward – Josh Anderson – London
Best goal scorer – Daniil Zharkov ( Best pure goal scorer in my opinion, but lacks consistency)
Best playmaker – Brendan Gaunce – Belleville
Best stickhandler – Gemel Smith – Owen Sound

Which dman is the most likely to hit 60 points in the NHL? – Cody Ceci – Ottawa
Which dman is the most likely to get Norris consideration? – Cody Ceci – Ottawa
Which forward is most likely to threaten a scoring title in the NHL? – Nail Yakupov – Sarnia
Which forward is most likely to be a finalist for the Selke? Scott Laughton – Oshawa
Which goalie is most likely to be a Vezina finalist? – Malcolm Subban – Belleville (probably the only one with a real chance)
What player in the draft has the best chance of Captaining an NHL team? – Brendan Gaunce – Belleville

Which projected 1st rounder has the highest potential to bust? – Andreas Athanasiou – London
Most overrated player in the draft? – Andreas Athanasiou – London
Most underrated player in the draft? – Warren Steele – Kingston – Believe he wasn’t even ranked by CS

Again, thanks to my source for your candor.
